Killymoon Rangers Back Local Cancer Charity

Stuart Glasgow
Killymoon Rangers launched their season with a show of support of Northern Ireland’s leading local charity. In place of a back shirt sponsor the local team decided to display the Action Cancer Action Man logo showing support for the charity’s Action Man campaign in association with Drumbo Park Greyhound Stadium.
Current evidence shows that men’s health is poorer than it need be. It is commonplace for men to avoid using primary care unless they are experiencing significant pain or an illness is too serious to ignore. Men also make poor use of preventative services due to reasons such as their belief that they should “tough it out” or that they may be “wasting the doctor’s time”.
Recent research has indicated that men will sometimes wait up to four years before consulting a doctor and are less likely to do so than women.
Paddy Power Bookmakers recently provided some odds that should be thought provoking for any male – whether your sporting interest is Gaelic Games, Rugby or Soccer. The odds of winning The All Ireland are 500/1; the odds of winning The Grand Slam are 3000/1; the odds of winning The Champions League are 3000/1. However, few men realise that the odds on a male getting cancer are 3/1. The Latest figures from the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry show there were just under 750 men diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2005 and 207 men died from the disease in 2006.
Leigh Chamberlain Events & PR Officer for Action Cancer commented “We are delighted Killymoon Rangers have decided to support Action Cancer with the shirt logo. We are continually looking for ways to raise awareness within local communities about the dangers concerning men’s health and this is a great way to do just that.”
Mark Wilson, Vice-Chairman of Killymoon Rangers said “We decided to display Action Cancer’s logo on our shirt as it is a disease that affects the whole community. Nearly everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer. It wasn’t until I got in touch with the charity that I realised how high the odds are of a male contracting cancer and it has recently touched the footballing world with ex Celtic and Wales player, John Hartson, being diagnosed with testicular cancer and the tragic death of Sir Bobby Robson after a long battle against the disease.
Action Cancer currently offers an MOT service for men onboard it’s Big Bus which includes checks for Body Mass Index, lung capacity, skin analysis for damage from the sun and advice on diet, exercise and related lifestyle choices.
