Killymoon Rangers first league game of the season ended in disappointment when they conceded a last minute goal to prevent them leaving Lurgan with full points. The game was played in continuous rain with Killymoon creating the best chances in the first half. William Montgomery thought he had opened the scoring after 20 minutes when he got on the end of Steven McElhatton's pass but the referee ruled that Montgomery was off-side. Warren Smith should have scored shortly after but under pressure from a defender he shot wide when well placed. Conall Kilpatrick was the next to go close but his flick shot was cleared off the Lurgan goal line. The home side's best chances came from set plays but it was Killymoon who broke the deadlock just before half-time whistle when Warren Smith scored with an excellent shot from the edge of the penalty area.
The home side had an excellent chance to equalise early in the second half when their young right winger found himself free at the edge of Killymoon's penalty area but his shot didn't trouble Maguire in the visitor's goal. Warren Smith looked like he had won the match for Killymoon on 70 minutes but his shot came back of the Lurgan goal post and was cleared. This turned out to be a turning point as Lurgan put Killymoon under sustained pressure for the final 15 minutes and got their reward with an equaliser in the last minute.
The Killymoon players were very disappointed but overall it was a positive performance and they will hopefully learn how to kill off games this season with the next match this Tuesday away to Fivemiletown.
