18 August 2007

Despite losing a number of players during the summer, Laurelvale arrived in Cookstown with a young squad who were intent on not giving the home team any space and this was how the match started with both teams taking time to settle into any pattern. With William Montgomery and Warren Smith having opened their goal scoring account for the season in the first 2 games, it was their strike partner Martin Bogan who broke his duck after 20 minutes. After a period of sustained pressure the ball broke to Bogan just inside the Laurelvale penalty area and despite being closed down quickly he was able to swivel and hook the ball into the corner of the visitor’s net giving the keeper no chance. This settled Killymoon and they started to get the ball on the ground and play some good football, but could not add to their lead before the half-time whistle.

Adrian Ferson started his first game of the season alongside Gareth McFarland and Nigel Purvis in the defence in the absence Kilpatrick and the only time they looked like conceding was on the hour mark when the Laurelvale centre half weaved his way down the right wing and was able to get in around the back of the defence before a last minute tackle by McFarland averted the danger. This was a wake up call that Killymoon needed and on 70 minutes they got the important second goal when a Laurelvale defender could only divert a corner from Daryl Flanagan into his own net. The visitors started to take chances after this as they tried to get back into the match, but the Killymoon players are learning from the previous games how to close out matches when they are in front and they created the best opportunities hitting their opponents on the break. Montgomery was close to hitting number 3 for Killymoon near the end when his marauding run down the right wing caused panic in the Laurelvale defence and it took an excellent save from their keeper to prevent another goal. Killymoon were content to play out the final few minutes and record their second win of the season.
