Killymoon Rangers 2 Warrenpoint Town 3 15 September 2007
Warrenpoint put a big dent in Killymoon's title aspirations, even this early in the season, with an excellent win despite playing more than half the match with 10 men.
Killymoon got off to the perfect start when Martin Bogan finished off a neat move to chip the ball over the head of the visiting keeper into the corner of the net. Playing some good football Killymoon looked to be controlling the game with Daryl Flanagan and Bogan going close to extending the lead, but the game changed after 25 minutes. With the home players finding it difficult to follow the movement of the Warrenpoint players the visitors right winger found space at the edge of the penalty area and gave Gareth Maguire no chance with an excellent shot into the top corner of the net. The visitors started to take control but were dealt a blow just before half time when their centre half received a straight red card.
The home side came out for the second half in confident mood but this quickly changed when the referee awarded a penalty to Warrenpoint for hand ball and the resulting penalty was duly dispatched. This seemed to have a negative affect on the home side as the found it difficult to break down the well drilled Warrenpoint side who also looked more likely to extend their lead on the counter attack and this was exactly what happened on the hour mark. A mistake in the home defence gave the visiting forward a free run and shot at Maguire and although the Killymoon keeper saved well he could do nothing as the rebound was knocked into the open net from another Warrenpoint player.
David McMullan did reduce the arrears in the final moments from the penalty spot but it was too late to prevent Warrenpoint overtaking Killymoon in the league with a well deserved victory.
