Killymoon Rangers were back to full strength last Saturday when they entertained Bourneview at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena. The home side started brightly and it wasn’t long before they took the lead. Francisco Gomes chased a long ball towards the corner flag and got there ahead of his marker, when he then went past the defender before playing the ball across the Bourneview penalty area where David McMullan arrived from midfield to slot the ball into the bottom corner of the net. This was a great start for the home side and they looked likely to increase their lead on a number of occasions the best chance falling to William Montgomery after some good approach work however, Montgomery’s first touch took him away from the danger area when he had made space for himself 8 yards in front of the visitor’s goal. As the half progressed the visitors started to get back into the game pushing the home side deeper into their own half. On 25 minutes Bourneview drew level from a free kick 25 yards from the Killymoon goal. The free kick was hit low into the penalty area and picked up by a Bourneview forward who had made a diagonal run across the box and despite having his back to the goal he was given time to turn and hit a shot low into the net. Killymoon were finding it difficult to get back into the game as the visitors continued to push them back but Warren Smith, who was buzzing throughout the match, got on the end of a flick on to chip the ball over the Bourneview keeper to restore the home side’s lead. Despite this set back Bourneview continued to push forward and were unlucky not to draw level on 2 occasions when they struck the cross bar, but fortunately for Killymoon no-one was on hand to put the rebound into the net.

The second half was a lot more scrappy affair with both teams playing more long balls to their front men and on the hour mark it was this tactic that resulted in the visitor’s equaliser. Gareth McFarland, who was having a good game in the Killymoon defence, looked to have the situation under control but the ball bounced over his outstretched leg and into the path of a Bourneview forward. Although Killymoon did get men behind the ball the forward had time to pull the ball back and shoot past Gareth Maguire in the home goal. Despite the introduction of Daryl Flanagan, Patrick McElhatton and Cameron Stewart, Killymoon were unable to breach the visitor’s defence, even though they had a couple of free kicks from very good positions. The last 20 minutes were mainly uneventful as the game ended in a draw, in what was probably the correct result.

This was not the result Killymoon would have wanted or expected, in a season that has lacked any consistency, but with increased competition for places it will hopefully only be a short time before there is an improvement in the performances and subsequently the results
