Killymoon Rangers 4
AFC Craigavon 1
16 February 2008 |
|
Killymoon will never create so many chances and score so few goals against a very poor AFC team who are rebuilding for next season. The first few minutes saw the visitors take the initiative and by contrast Killymoon, missing the McElhatton brothers and the influential S Purvis, were struggling to find any sort of rhythm. |
|
Slowly however McMullan took charge in midfield and with Flanagan firing in some probing crosses from the left wing the chances soon began to flow with Bogan and Mulligan missing from close range and the keeper saving brilliantly from McMullan. On 10 minutes the home side finally opened the scoring when a Flanagan corner was headed home by McMullan. Killymoon continued to create and miss a plethora of opportunities as AFC's defence leaked like a sieve.

However, in their first real attack AFC levelled matters as a deep cross into the box wasn't dealt with and the big centre forward nodded home the equaliser on 17 minutes. For ten minutes Killymoon lost their shape but with Smith beginning to buzz up front they finally began to pass their way back into the game. Midfielders McFarland and Montgomery both wasted good opportunities before the front three all squandered equally good chances and with the visiting keeper pulling off terrific saves at regular intervals, it seemed that the AFC goal was living a charmed life. The half time team talk reiterated the need for patience but the management team also rammed home the need for a higher tempo and more aggression from their lacklustre players and it seemed to do the trick.

| Within 5 minutes of the restart Killymoon had sewn up the 3 points with two quick fire goals. First up came captain McMullan who saw his deflected shot squirm past the keeper, then a short corner was returned to Flanagan who looped his shot over the stranded AFC keeper to give Killymoon a 3-1 lead.
A deflated AFC were now being overrun with ease and Bogan will long wonder how he missed two easy chances set up by Mulligan and Smith, while an overlap by McFarland saw his effort cleared off the line with the keeper beaten.
Big defender's Kilpatrick and Fearson were the next to be thwarted with Kilpatrick's header cleared off the line and Fearson hitting the side netting and once again the AFC keeper pulled of super stops from M stewart's header and Montgomery's shot.
Subs Glasgow and Hudson both helped to create more chances for thei front three but it wasn't until the final minutes that Smith found himself totally unmarked in the six yard box and he gleefully rammed the ball past the man of the match doing goals for AFC. |
|
Three valuable points for Killymoon who played well in bursts but wasted too many chances against an AFC tean destined for relegation. The Killymoon management team commented, 'Against a better side we may have been made to pay for our slackness in front of goal, but we did knock the ball about quite well and in the second half our defence was a lot more solid and with three top players missing we can't be unhappy with the three points. The return to form of Daryl Flanagan and the introduction of the promising Ryan Glasgow means we have a real battle on for places which augers well for the rest of the season.'
