This was a must win game for the weakened Killymoon team, as they attempted to retake top spot in this intriguing title race. However the first twenty minutes saw a really fired up Blackersmill determined to wipe out the memory of a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Killymoon in Janaury, and from the outset the visitors found their backs to the wall.
With Killymoon missing S Purvis, N Purvis and W Smith from their starting lineup, it took the cool head of veteran Eddie Hudson to keep his side on level terms as the Mill bombarded the Killymoon back three but without really troubling Maguire in the Rangers goal.
With some of the home side's tackling really brutal, two footed tackles being the dish of the day, the ref soon brandished yellow cards thick and fast but it was the Moon who seemed to lose their shape and it took until the 27th minute for Rangers to threaten the home goal with Mulligan firing well wide.
Against the run of play Killymoon took the lead when, following good work down the left by McFarland and Mulligan, a Flanagan free kick was spilled by the home keeper allowing Mulligan to scramble the ball home from close range.
Killymoon now began to knock the ball about well on a sticky and uneven surface and Montgomery, Mulligan and Flanagan all tested the home keeper from distance.
Blackersmill however drew level on 34 minutes following a brilliant last ditch tackle by Fearson. Killymoon failed to clear the resultant set piece and when the ball broke at the edge of the box a half hit shot somehow confused Maguire and the ball squeezed under his body into the net.
Man of the match Hudson rallied his troops and brilliantly led by example clearing several dangerous crosses, as the home side finished the half on top. Disaster however wasn't far away for the home side as, after several late and high challenges their right winger saw red on 43 minutes, a just result for a player intent on dangerous rather than fair tackles.
The second half saw the re-organised Killymoon exploit the extra man and within 12 minutes Flanagan and Montgomery had given them a two goal cushion.
First Flanagan fired home an unstoppable drive from 28 yards into the top corner and the after Mulligan and McElhatton had exchanged passes, Montgomery latched onto the breaking ball and gleefully put the Moon 3-1 in front.
For some strange reason the Killymoon front three now started to over elaborate, with only Bogan really holding the ball up and only some great headed clearances from Kilpatrick, Fearson and McMullan, manfully playing with a heavy cold, kept the home side at bay. On 72 minutes the home sides central midfielder also saw red after a crude tackle from behind on McMullan and minutes later Montgomery saw a legitimate goal chalked off by the ref for supposed offside.
With Killymoon now cruising it needed a stroke of fortune to give the home side a foothold in the game and on 75 minutes Kilpatrick was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball and the resultant penalty was easily despatched to set up a nervous last 15 minutes.
Subs S Purvis and K Smith were sent on to strengthen the Killymoon backline and the home side launched several dangerous long balls into the Moon box, but the visitors defended brilliantly with Maguire only really called into action once when he superbly tipped over a long range piledriver.
Killymoon were grateful to hear the final whistle but this was a very well ground out result and it showed that Rangers can win ugly when required and it propelled Moon back to the top of the table with all still to play for.
Killymoon: G Maguire, E Hudson, G McFarland, C Kilpatrick, A Fearson, S McElhatton, D McMullan, D Flanagan, W Montgomery, M Bogan, B Mulligan, Subs S Purvis, M Stewart, K Smith. Man of the Match Eddie Hudson.
