Killymoon Rangers returned to action after a 4 week lay off hoping to keep alive their slim hopes of capturing the league title for the first time.

The home side started without their suspended captain David McMullan and within 5 minutes found themselves a goal behind. A cross from the left wing was only cleared to the edge of the Killymoon penalty area and it was driven back in hard and low and managed to nestle into the bottom corner of Gareth Maguire’s right hand post. Despite this set back the home side worked hard and were able to put Dollingstown on the back foot as they pressed for an equaliser. A shot from Brian Mulligan was caught by the swirling wind and the visiting keeper did well to push the ball to safety. However, the keeper could do nothing after 20 minutes when Killymoon drew level. After a foul 25 yards from goal, Daryl Flanagan took responsibility for the free-kick and struck a bullet of a shot into the top corner of the net, leaving the keeper routed to the spot. This was becoming an end to end match with both teams intent on attacking and it was Killymoon who edged in front 10 minutes from the break when Mulligan picked up the ball just inside the opposition’s crowded penalty area, with his back to goal in, before swivelling and shooting low into the net. It was no more than the industrious front man deserved, who has breathed new life into the frontline since his return to the club. With both teams changing their formation to 4-3-3 there was very little between them, but Killymoon held on to their slight advantage to half-time.

The saying ‘four seasons in one day’ was very apt at the Mid-Ulster Sports Arena on Saturday as the weather seemed to change every 10 minutes with strong wind and rain was replaced by hail and then the sun would appear with the wind dropping. The crowd were enjoying the competitive match, despite having to scurry for cover from the elements on a regular basis, with the second have seeing the visitors take the match to Killymoon as they looked for an equaliser. Formations continued to change as the managers tried to out-fox each other, with Dollingstown creating the better chances as Killymoon tried to hold onto their lead and gain an important victory. Despite the pressure the visitors created very few clear cut chances, but an excellent free-kick from the visitors player manager Gary Duke, saw the ball go between Maguire in the home goal and the inrushing forwards, but fortunately for Killymoon no-one in the Dollingstown team could connect with the ball. Ryan Glasgow was thrown into the fray for Killymoon and the young player showed plenty of maturity as he quickly picked up the pace and help strengthen the midfield area. With only five minutes remaining it looked like all Killymoon’s hard work had been undone when sub Craig Martin looked to have mis-judged his challenge on the speedy Dollingstown left-winger, who fell into the penalty area, fortunately for Killymoon the referee adjudged the foul to have taken place just outside the penalty area. Strong defending from the home side, marshalled by the returning Nigel Purvis, saw out the remaining minutes to record Killymoon’s seventh straight win in the league and with Warrenpoint losing the Cookstown side are now 3 points clear at the top of the league however, Warrenpoint still have 4 games in hand.

The games don’t get any easier for Killymoon as they travel to Tandragee Rovers on Saturday, where it is notoriously difficult to beat the hosts. With McMullan back into the squad Killymoon will be hoping to keep their season alive for a little bit longer.
