| After putting themselves in with a chance of catching Warrenpoint for the league title less than 2 weeks ago, Killymoon Rangers season is now finishing with a whimper. Two heavy defeats in succession have left the Cookstown side with only pride to play for in their remaining 3 fixtures. |
| The day started brightly for the home side when they went in front within 5 minutes. A long throw by David McMullan into the Hanover penalty area was only cleared to the edge of the box, and with the wind behind him, Steven McElhatton was able to strike home his first goal of the season. However, within 10 minutes Hanover were level. After a neat build up down the left by the visitors, the ball was eventually played into the home penalty area and a Hanover forward got the slightest of touches and keeper Gareth Maguire could only watch as the ball trickled into the corner of the net. With the strong wind making it difficult to play good football Killymoon did have the advantage of having it at their backs and they should have regained their lead before the half time whistle, especially from a number of set pieces. Three successive corners from Gareth McFarland caused panic in the visitors’ penalty area with one having to be headed off the goal line by the centre half. Stephen Purvis also went close with a free kick, but his effort went narrowly wide and midfielder William Montgomery saw his shot from 20 yards turned away for a corner by the Hanover keeper. Despite being under pressure, last season’s league champions looked dangerous on the counter attack and could have went into the interval ahead after some quick passing opened up the home defence, but the resulting shot went narrowly wide. |

| In the last 2 matches Killymoon have come out level for the second half but again they were found wanting as the visitors capitalised on basic errors and punished Killymoon for not taking their chances in the first half. As with the first half the home side again started brightly creating a number half chances, with Martin Bogan going closest with a header at the back post, but it was the visitors who took the lead just before the hour mark. A corner from the right was played low into the front post but as the Killymoon players watched the ball come into the area a Hanover forward attacked the ball and gave his side the lead. Although Killymoon matched the visitors with possession, they never really threatened when they got near the visitors’ penalty area, whereas Hanover were clinical when going forward. The third goal came with 20 minutes remaining when a ball into the Killymoon penalty area was won by a Hanover forward and his header ricocheted off Adrian Ferson and past Maguire, who was wrong footed with the deflection. Killymoon never recovered from this set back and the points were wrapped up near the end when a cross from the left was powerfully headed into the net by an unmarked Hanover forward. This gave Killymoon a chance to hand Peter Sloan his debut after an impressive season in the reserve side. |
| This was a very disappointing result for Killymoon who despite not being outplayed in the last 2 matches they have been comprehensively outscored. With 3 games left the Killymoon managers will have to pick up their players in order to secure second place in the league. On Saturday Killymoon travel to Bourneview in what is always a tight battle. The players and management would like to pass on their congratulations to player Patrick McElhatton and his wife Laura on the birth of their daughter. |
