After two heavy defeats, Killymoon Rangers travelled to Tandragee to play Bourneview Y.M., hoping to get back into winning ways. With the earlier encounter in Cookstown ending in a draw, Killymoon knew they would have to put on a good performance if they were to come away with 3 points.
The opening exchanges were very scrappy with the visiting team finding it difficult to put passes together on a bumpy pitch. Bourneview tactics were centred on the long ball from set pieces and regularly pushed Killymoon back by throwing 5 and 6 men forward, but the visitors’ defence, ably assisted by the midfield, dealt comfortably with any pressure. Killymoon’s front 3 of Martin Bogan, Brian Mulligan and Warren Smith looked lively as the match wore on, but it took a mistake from the home keeper to break the deadlock. A long ball from Adrian Ferson looked to be going safely to the Bourneview keeper, but the he misjudged the bounce of the ball and it went over his head to a grateful Mulligan, who had followed the flight of the ball, and he made no mistake from 10 yards out. This settled the visitors and they edged a tight first half without adding to their goal tally.
The second half saw Killymoon begin to relax and play some neat football with the midfield of William Montgomery, Daryl Flanagan, Stephen Purvis and Steven McElhatton stamping their authority on the match. The second goal eventually arrived on the hour mark when Bogan ended his scoring drought with a close range finish after a scramble in the Bourneview penalty area. Killymoon should have finished off their opponents after this, but a number of good saves from the home keeper, especially from W. Smith, ensured that the visitors couldn't relax. Bourneview had nothing to lose and had a 10 minute period were they put pressure on Gareth Maguire’s goal, but they could not find a way through the defence, who were determined not to repeat any mistakes from the previous weeks. Killymoon eventually killed off the match in the final minutes when W. Smith unselfishly squared the ball to Mulligan, who had his shot saved on the goal line, but the ball rebounded to Smith who had the simple task of heading the ball into the net from 2 yards.
This was a much improved all round team performance from Killymoon, after a couple of difficult weeks. This Saturday Killymoon travel to champions elect Warrenpoint Town in their penultimate game of the season. Martin Bogan is unavailable for the trip, but David McMullan will make a welcome return after missing the Bourneview game.
