Only a couple of weeks ago Killymoon Rangers were challenging Warrenpoint for the title, but when the teams met last week there was a massive difference as the champions elect showed why they are sitting at the top of the table.
Killymoon started the game in confident mood and knocked the ball about with Stephen McElhatton having the first effort after some neat build up play. On 15 minutes, with little between the teams, a poor back pass was easily intercepted by a Warrenpoint forward who gave Gareth Maguire no chance as he rounded the visiting keeper to give the home side the lead. Another poor pass on the edge of the Killymoon penalty area on the half hour mark enabled the home side to double their lead, as the ball was struck low into net, again giving Maguire no chance in the visitors’ goal. With Warrenpoint now playing with confidence the visitors’ were finding it difficult to deal with their movement and were content to get to half time only 2 goals behind.
Despite the players going out in the second half in positive mood the match was soon out of their reach as Warrenpoint hit 2 quick goals to finish the game as a contest. The remainder of the game was damage limitation, but the efforts of the Killymoon players was no match to a team on top form. Warren Smith did get a consolation goal near the end in between the home side’s final 2 goals, but it was another bad day at the office for the Cookstown side who looked fatigued and just wanted to see the end of the season. The only bright note for Killymoon was the debut of Mark Ramsay, who became the 39th player to play for the first team this season.
Killymoon finish their campaign for another season on Saturday when they entertain Tandragee Rovers at the Mid-Ulster Sports Arena, kick-off 2.15pm.
