Killymoon Rangers 2
Tandragee 1
10 May 2008
Killymoon Rangers finished their season on in style last Saturday with one of their best performances of the season. Less than a month ago Tandragee ended Killymoon’s title challenge when they defeated the Cookstown side 5-2 in the reverse fixture, but Killymoon got their revenge playing some excellent football in the process.
With Stewart leading the Killymoon frontline in place of the injured Mulligan, the home side put early pressure on Tandragee, but found themselves behind after 15 minutes. The referee awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Killymoon area, but keeper Maguire could do nothing with an unstoppable shot from the Tandragee left-back that went into the top corner of the net. This didn’t deter Killymoon as they pushed for an equaliser, playing without any nerves and putting together some neat passes in the process, but it took a more straight forward move to get back on level terms. With half-time approaching Smith picked up the ball from a throw, just inside the Tandragee half and with 3 defenders chasing him, he broke towards the visitors goal and when it looked like he had taken the ball too far he showed why he was Killymoon’s leading goal scorer as he shot across the goal keeper into the bottom of the net.
This was a sucker punch for the visitors as the home side controlled the second half, except for one near miss when the scores were still level. Despite pressurising the Tandragee goal for a large majority of the second half the vital break-through seemed to be going to elude Killymoon until 10 minutes from the end when substitute Burns marked an impressive debut with a goal to seal the points and a deserved victory for the home side.
It was impossible to name a man-of-the-match as every player on the pitch had an excellent game and showed what they can achieve if they play to the ability the management know they have. A special mention however, goes to Nigel Purvis, who was given the captain’s armband, for what looks like being his last game for Killymoon, as he is hanging up his boots after a long and distinguished career, not only for Killymoon, but also Cookstown United and Coagh United. I am sure everyone who has played or managed Nigel over these years will thank him for his effort and professionalism and wish him all the best for the future. Hopefully for Killymoon he will come back to help in some capacity in the near future.
The management and players would also like to thank the supporters and committee who have supported them throughout the season.
