22 September 2007 : Premier Cup 3rd Round

In the space of the last two weeks, Killymoon have managed to dominate the opposition for nearly 70% of the game but still came out empty handed. Last week the Moon created few chances but on Saturday they carved out at least 10 clear cut openings, including a penalty and still failed to win this Premier Cup quarter final.

The visitors came out of the blocks quickly and Killymoon looked lethargic and slow to the ball, so it was no surprise that Fivemiletown, after missing a number of half chances, opened the scoring on 13 minutes when a corner was only half cleared and the visiting big centre half rifled home an unstoppable thunderbolt from 25 yards. At last Killymoon woke up and a few tasty challenges flew in as the home side stepped up the ante. Twice in five minutes clear handball decisions went against the Moon inside the Town penalty area and the visitors were living a charmed life as the ball rattled around in their box.

On 38 minutes Killymoon deservedly drew level as W Smith and D McMullan exchanged passes releasing the home skipper who stroked the ball home with the outside of his boot from 16 yards. The last few minutes of the half was nip and tuck but it was Killymoon who ended the 45 minutes the happier.

The second period again saw Killymoon start slowly and again Fivemiletown were well on top, pressing the home side into their own half. A number of long balls into the Killymoon box created panic and it was from another set piece that the visiting striker flicked the ball home to again edge his side in front.

This week however the home side showed real character and started passing their way back into the game, pinning Fivemiletown into the last third for long periods of play. Striker Smith twice beat the keeper only to see defenders clear the ball off the line and a great McFarland corner nearly crept in at the back post after a killymoon header seemed to be handed in the area. As Moon piled forward another corner resulted in a strange penalty decision by the referee, but unfortunately McMullan saw his spot kick saved by the home keeper. Again Smith broke free only to see his effort cleared and both Bogan and Montgomery failed to connect with crosses as the home side bravely gave their all. Right on the final whistle Fivemiletown defended another Killymoon corner and with only Maguire in the home half the clearance fell to a visiting player who gleefully lobbed the keeper to secure a semi final slot for his side.

Joint manager Michael Wilson commented, 'We couldn't ask any more from our players, they showed real character but didn't get the breaks, that's football. Unfortunately it's really gutting. This is a brilliant league with no weak teams and all the sides are capable of beating each other, so we quickly need to get back to winning ways. Our trainers and coaches will work hard to lift the players this week and we may freshen things up a bit for the next game, but these are the best players in the area and they don't become bad players overnight, I have faith in the squad and at least we're getting our slump out of the way early'.
