6 October 2007 : JJB Irish Cup

Killymoon crashed out of the Irish Cup to Islandmagee on Saturday, but despite the scoreline the team gave their Amateur League opponents a tough game. Missing 8 players this was always going to be an uphill battle for the Cookstown side and the number of changes badly affected them in the early stages of the match with the team looking very disjointed. However, Killymoon had an excellent chance in the first couple of minutes when Francisco Gomes found himself one on one with the keeper, but his attempt to curl the ball into the top corner was denied by a finger tip save by the home keeper. Islandmagee opened the scoring in the 20 minute when one of their front men was given time to turn 8 yards from goal and gave Steven McKernan no chance in the Killymoon goal. Cameron Stewart nearly equalised shorthly after but again the Islandmagee keeper pulled off a tremendous save and within a few minutes the home side doubled their lead to go into the interval 2 goals ahead.

The second half saw a much improved performance from the visitors with players such as Steven McKernan, Mark Freeburn, Brian Smith, Ryan Glasgow, Martin Daly and Marc Stewart beginning to find the pace of the game and give their opponents plenty to think about. With the score a 2 nil the next goal was going to be vital and on the hour mark Warren Smith made space for himself in the Islandmagee box and looked to have pulled a goal back only for the home keeper to make his third excellent save to knock the ball for a corner. This was the turning point of the half as minutes later the home side hit their third goal, but the Killymoon players didn't let their heads go down and Patrick McElhatton, making a welcome return to the team, shot narrowly wide from 20 yards. With the visitiors tiring the home side hit two late goals to give them a flattering scoreline, but there were plenty of positives for the Killymoon management to take out of the match with the most inexperienced players Ryan Glasgow and Martin Daly gaining confidence as the match progresseda and showing that they have the potential to be pushing for a first team spot in the near future.
