8 September 2007 : Bob Radcliffe Cup

Killymoon Rangers travelled to Lakeview Park last Saturday in the first round of the Davison Group Bob Radcliffe Cup to take on Loughgall.

With Rangers missing key defenders, McFarland and Ferson, manager Michael Wilson was forced to reshuffle his squad with Martin Bogan dropping back into defence and the team playing a 3-5-1 formation.

Rangers started well, proving that they were not overawed by their more illustrious oppostion - a team that were playing Premier League football last season. Rangers hard working midfield were nulifying most of the home team's attacks although they were dangerous on the flanks. When Loughgall did come close to making a break-through they found Rangers rear-guard in superb form, Nigel Purvis organising his trops with Conall Kilpatrick in particular outstanding. Keeper Gareth Maguire did have to pull off a trio of top class saves mid way through the half but apart from these Killymoon dealt well with what was thrown at them. Up front Warren Smith and William Montgomery were working extremely hard but were unable to penetrate a well organised rear-guard. As the half progressed Killymoon gained more and more confidence but with Loughgall beginning to show signs of frustration the half time whistle gave them a welcome chance to regroup and regain some composure.

Rangers knew that the second period would see the home side start determined to impose themselves right from the first minute. And so it proved with Rangers camped in their own half for the first ten minutes of the half. However, it looked like they were weathering the storm until Loughgall forced the breakthrough.

Some neat approach play and a one-two on the edge of the Rangers penalty area released their centre-forward who gave Maguire no chance from twelve yards out. It was a disappointing goal for Killymoon to conceed as they had chance to break up the attack before the opposition got into the area. With Rangers needing a goal to get back in the game, manager Wilson took the brave decision to send on an extra attacker when other teams may have decided to shut up shop and settle for a low scoring defeat. Martin Daly now formed a three pronged attack alongside Smith and Montgomery and Rangers pressed for an equaliser. Inevitably this left more spaces at the back with Loughgall looking really dangerous for the first time in the match.

A secong goal fifteen minutes from time virtually put an end to Killymoon's hopes of an upset, Dean Smith applying the final touch for the home side. Still Rangers pushed forward but they were unable to create clear-cut openings. A third goal for Loughgall in the final minute of play sealed the win and made the score line a little flattering for the home side and certainly didnt do justice to the performance of the Killymoon side.

Team : Gareth Maguire, Nigel Purvis, Conall Kilpatrick, Martin Bogan, Daryl Flanagan, David McMullan, Francisco Gomez, Steven McElhatton, Stephen Purvis, William Montgomery, Warren Smith. Subs : Martin Daly, Kyle Smith, Eddie Davis.

After the match, Michael Wilson, commented, " I though the lads did themselves proud today against a very strong Irish League Division one side. We matched them for long periods and actually played some excellent football at times. I was only disappointed that we weren't able to create more chances and were'nt able to test their keeper more. Otherwise I was really pleased with the attitude, committment and aplication shown by everyone. We must maintain these levels if we are to compete at this sort of standard.
