20 October 2007 : Marshall Cup

Killymoon Rangers went into this Marshall Cup game expected to win against a team in a division below them. However, this season has been very frustrating for the Cookstown outfit, as they have not played to their potential and could not take anything for granted against a side pushing for promotion. The tight pitch in Armagh was in poor condition but Killymoon adapted well and took the lead after only 8 minutes. The visitors were awarded a free-kick 30 yards from the Lisanally goal and Conall Kilpatrick took it quickly to William Montgomery who side stepped a challenge and hit a powerful shot that the keeper could only parry into the net. Killymoon looked comfortable for the first half hour, but had to be on their guard at the back to keep the lively home centre forward under control. Killymoon’s own centre forward, Warren Smith, had 3 excellent opportunities to kill off the game but although he struck his efforts well he was unable to increase the visitor’s lead. Like most of the season to date, Killymoon’s failure to get the second goal started to play on their minds as they let Lisanally back into the game near the end of the half. The home side started to push Killymoon back and came close to getting an equaliser from a number of set pieces, but they were unable to make the break through before the half time whistle.

The half time interval was used by Killymoon to patch up a number of players who picked up knocks, but Patrick McElhatton was unable to continue and had to be replaced by Daryl Flanagan. The home side didn't give Killymoon any time to settle at the re-start as they got back on level terms as the visitor’s defence went awol. As Lisanally attacked down their left the Killymoon players were dragged towards the action that left a Lisanally midfielder with acres of space on the right and when he received the ball the home player gave Gareth Maguire no chance, slotting the ball into the bottom corner. Killymoon took the next 10 minutes to settle as Lisanally looked to take the lead with a speculative long range shot, nearly bouncing into the net, requiring Maguire to tip the ball onto the crossbar before it was cleared to safety. After weathering early second half pressure Killymoon started to create chances themselves with Francisco Gomes having the first when he found himself with only the keeper to beat, but before he could make up his mind a defender was able to get back and clear the danger. With 15 minutes left the next goal looked like being decisive and it was Killymoon who got it. A hand ball 20 yards from goal gave Killymoon a free-kick and substitute Martin Bogan took control and blasted the ball through the wall into the net, despite the keeper getting a hand to the ball. This settled the visitors and they started to create chances at will with the home side starting to tire. It was Bogan who wrapped up the game with 10 minutes remaining when he turned his marker in the box and shot left foot in off the keeper’s left hand post. Smith eventually showed what he could do in the final minutes when he lobbed the home keeper to give them a rather flattering score-line.

Although still not firing on full cylinders this was a good performance by Killymoon, especially on a poor playing surface, and they will be buoyed by the fact that they are starting to turn chances into goals.

This Saturday it is back to league action when Killymoon visit champions Hanover, in what is always a keenly contested match. With Montgomery missing and a number of players carrying injuries the Killymoon managers will have to assess their squad with Adrian Ferson coming back after a number of weeks building up his fitness in the reserves.
