9 February 2008 : Marshall Cup

Buoyed by two recent wins, Killymoon entered this Marshall Cup game in great spirits and for the first 20 minutes they dominated the home side. With the front three of Smith, Bogan and the impressive Montgomery creating numerous openings it seemed only a matter of time before Killymoon took the lead. First Bogan shot wide before McMullan and Smith saw shots go close without troubling the home keeper and when Flanagan hooked a shot inches wide it looked like being one of those days for the visitors.

Warrenpoint slowly came into the game, especially along their right flank and on 26 minutes a quick one two opened up the Rangers defence and the cross shot beat Maguire to give the home side an undeserved lead. Killymoon however showed real spirit and Smith was unlucky when he nipped in front of the keeper only to see the ball go out for a goalkick with the net gaping and the visitors ended the half on top with a Fearson free kick causing panic in the home defence but without getting a clinical touch from a striker.

The second half saw Killymoon again take the game to their opponents but with the visitors pushing forward the match was much more open with gaps appearing in both defences. Montgomery, who was having a terrific game, created the best opportunity of the opening minutes with a brilliant cross which Killymoon just couldn't convert, while at the other end Maguire pulled of a super save from the big home striker. On 57 minutes the visitors failed to cut out a ball deep into their penalty area and Maguire's punch fell kindly for the home side with the resultant shot putting them two up. Back came Killymoon and sub Mulligan, adding bite to the attack, teed up Smith who saw the home number two brilliantly take the ball off his toe with the goal at his mercy. However with 19 minutes remaining livewire Mulligan burst into the Warrenpoint penalty area only to be upended and N Purvis fired home the penalty to bring the match to the boil.
Twice Warrenpoint cleared the ball off their line as the visitors pushed for the equaliser and on 85 minutes a Stewart cross nearly created the goal Killymoon were looking for and as Montgomery returned the cross into the area, Mulligan glanced his header just wide with the keeper beaten. As normally happens this missed opportunity was costly for the visitors with Warrenpoint sealing their victory with three minutes of normal time remaining, a victory they greeted with real relief, after a gripping and close fought encounter against an impressive Killymoon team.

A disappointed but proud Killymoon management team said, 'We couldn't ask any more from our players, they were magnificant and today we just didn't get the breaks. We had possibly 65% of the possession but Warrenpoint are a very good side and were very hard to break down with their keeper and centre half in terrific form and they hit us on the break with their pace. We have no doubt that our players will repond in next weeks home tie against AFC Craigavon and if they show the same committment and skill then we fully expect three points to further push us up the table.'
