Killymoon Rangers Belfast ‘Giants’ Glentoran made their third trip to the Mid-Ulster Sports Arena in as many years to play local side Killymoon Rangers in a pre-season friendly last Thursday. This was Killymoon’s first match since returning to training just over a week ago against a side playing their third game in preparation for their UEFA Cup match. It was also an important fixture for the Cookstown side as they prepare to make a giant step up to the second tier of Irish League football after their entry into the IFA Championship that kicks off at the start of August with a local derby at home to Tobermore United.

Glentoran started without Shane McCabe, who was the only player missing from what will probably be their starting line-up for their European match and within 30 seconds had stunned their hosts by taking the lead. Darren Boyce found space on the right wing and his inch perfect cross was volleyed into the top corner by Northern Ireland international Gary Hamilton. It didn’t take long before Hamilton doubled his and Glentoran’s tally when the Killymoon defence didn’t deal with a high ball into the penalty area and Michael Halliday back-heeled to his strike partner who made no mistake from 10 yards. The home side did eventually settle down and took the game to their illustrious visitors with both Warren Smith and Martin Bogan shooting narrowly wide. Killymoon captain David McMullan should have pulled a goal back after 15 minutes when he burst through the Glentoran defence but his attempt to chip the keeper only resulted in the ball going harmlessly into a grateful Elliott Morris’ hands. Glentoran were knocking the ball about with ease and Killymoon were working hard to stay in the game, but the Premier League side were faster in thought and movement and this was shown when they scored their third goal when Dean Fitzgerald reacted quicker to a cross to flick the ball past Gareth Maguire in the home goal. Michael Halliday got into the act before the half-time interval when he skilfully chipped Maguire from the edge of the penalty area.

Killymoon Rangers The interval was a relief for the Killymoon players who needed time to get a breather after working so hard trying to keep up with their opponents, but it didn’t get any better at the start of the second when they conceded a fifth within 2 minutes of the re-start when Halliday scored his second. Half-time replacement David Scullion hit number 6 after a Killymoon mistake, but despite the clinical finishing of Glentoran, Killymoon never stopped working and got their reward when a long throw from McMullan was knocked into the net by the alert Brian Mulligan. On the hour mark Halliday hit his hat-trick before both teams started to make numerous substitutions. One of the Glentoran replacements Taylor increased the visitor’s tally to eight, before 3 of the Killymoon substitutes combined to end the scoring. A ball from Cameron Stewart found Ryan Glasgow who laid the ball into the path of Willie Watson and the young winger calmly slipped the ball into the Glentoran net.

Despite the score line this was an excellent work out for Killymoon who know that there is plenty of work to be done on the training ground before the start of the season. All 20 players in the squad got time on the pitch and showed the management that there is good competition for places and this will be very important with the large number of games to be played this season.

Killymoon would like to thank Glentoran for travelling up to Cookstown again for the match and all those who helped to organise the match including the members from Cookstown Glens who assisted with the stewarding. It was also nice to see all the local support including Desertmartin F.C. who cancelled their training to give their players and officials a chance to watch the game.

Training continues on Thursday at 7.30pm at the Sports Arena and on Saturday the Killymoon squad will be split for the matches against Ardstraw at the Sports Arena (ko 2pm) and the visit to Omagh United now managed by Roy McCready.
