Killymoon Rangers 1
Tobermore United 4
Saturday 2nd August 2008, IFA Championship, Referee: L. Tavinder

Killymoon Rangers made their debut in the new IFA Championship last Saturday, but their big day was ruined by Tobermore United who ran out comfortable winners in front of a big crowd at the Mid-Ulster Sports Arena. The home side were dealt a blow prior to the match when Conall Kilpatrick was ruled out due to injury to add to Brian Mulligan and James Ferguson who were already unavailable.

The match, sponsored by First Trust Bank, was played in warm conditions and the first half was very cagey with neither team taking control. The main threats from both sides came from set-plays, but the defences stood strong as clear cut opportunities were at a premium. The closest either team came to breaking the deadlock came near the end of the half when Killymoon keeper Gareth Maguire made an excellent save to tip a stinging shot over his crossbar.

Half-Time: 0-0

After a solid first half, Killymoon were in positive mood when they took the field in the second half and their mood was lifted even further within a few minutes of the re-start when Tobermore were reduced to 10 men when Mervyn Pattison was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for deliberate handball. However, instead of lifting the home side the sending off kicked the visitors into life and they started to dominate proceedings, pushing Killymoon back into their own half. The Cookstown side couldn't cope with the movement of the Tobermore players and mistakes started to creep into their game. On 53 minutes the deadlock was broken when Killymoon didn't deal with a ball down the Tobermore left flank and when the ball was crossed into the box Gavin Doherty had the simple task of knocking it into an empty net. Ten minutes later it was 2 nil when confusing in the home defence gifted Michael Walsh with a goal and as the home side were in disarray the visitors hit number three through Neil Lamont. Another excellent save from Maguire prevented Tobermore extending their lead further, but Killymoon did produce the best crafted goal on 70 minutes when a neat move down the right gave Daryl Flanagan space to put a dangerous cross into the Tobermore penalty area and Warren Smith was in the right place to steer the ball past Kyle Hasson in the visitor’s goal. The joy was however short lived as another misplaced pass gave Lamont the space to drive to the edge of the Killymoon penalty area and blast an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net to finish the scoring.

After a positive start to the match Killymoon were left in no doubt how difficult this league will be as Tobermore showed how teams cannot afford to make mistakes at this level as they will be punished. Despite this, the Killymoon management were able to take positives out of the first half performance and with players getting over injuries and others returning to the squad the performances in the coming weeks will hopefully improve. Killymoon would like to thank all those who came out to support them on Saturday and sent them best wishes for the season, as well as those who worked so hard in the background before and during the game along with the sponsors First Trust Bank. Killymoon have no fixture this Saturday, but play Newry City in a friendly on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm at the Newry Showgrounds.
