A large crowd turned out at the Mid-Ulster Sports Arena to watch the local derby between Killymoon and Coagh. The visitors came into the match in confident form after an excellent away win against Limavady and controlled most of the first half. For the opening half hour Stuart Dallas, with the help of his team mates, was running Killymoon ragged and it came as no surprise when he opened the scoring. After receiving the ball in space down the Coagh left side, Dallas drove towards the Killymoon penalty area, before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Gareth Maguire in the Killymoon goal. As the half continued Killymoon found it difficult to put any pressure on the Coagh defence with Stephen Hawe mopping up any attacks. Maguire was kept busy in the Killymoon goal as it looked like Coagh were going to extend their lead and they felt that they should have had a penalty on the half hour mark, but the referee gave the home side the benefit of the doubt. With the Killymoon managers looking to get to half time only one goal in arrears Warren Smith stepped up to square the match in the 41st minute. Stephen Purvis challenged for a high ball in the Coagh penalty area and after some head tennis the ball bounced in front of Smith, who stooped to head the ball into the corner of the Coagh net.

Fortunate to be on level terms at half time and trailing by a couple of goals, Killymoon started the second half brightly, but within 5 minutes of the re-start Coagh had re-gained the lead. A neat move down the right saw Mark McMenemy getting clear into the penalty area, but his shot was well saved by Maguire, but unfortunately for the Killymoon stopper the ball went back to McMenemy and he was able to put the ball across the goal where James Wardell had the simple task of putting the ball into an empty net. Credit to Killymoon who didn’t let their heads go down and began to put pressure on the Coagh defence with the home side finally getting some joy in the midfield. Unable to get the breakthrough, Killymoon through on the young guns of James Ferguson, Lee Hunter and Willie Watson to see if they could make the difference. With 10 minutes remaining the game exploded into life when a challenge from Gareth McFarland on Coagh’s Andrew Patterson resulted in a confrontation between both players with the referee giving Patterson a red card and to Coagh’s dismay he produced a yellow card for McFarland. After this it was one way traffic as Killymoon looked for the equaliser and were unlucky on a number of occasions not to draw level. Johnny Pollock in the Coagh goal made an excellent save to tip a header away and Hawe was on hand to head the rebound off the line. James Ferguson had an excellent chance to equalise when he broke through the Coagh defence, but he could only drag his shot wide with only Pollock to beat. With time running out Smith looked like he had found a way past Pollock when he turned his marker before curling a shot from 20 yards that crashed off the Coagh cross-bar with Pollock well beaten. The visitors were happy to hear the final whistle soon after to take all 3 points and take them to the top of the Championship with their third successive win.

This was an excellent advert for local football and Killymoon can be very proud of their performance, especially in the second half, but will be looking to add a few points to their performances before too long.
