Killymoon Rangers travelled to Annagh Utd last Saturday for the 1st round of the Ladbrokes.com League Cup with manager Don Smyth having to re-shuffle his pack again with Adrian Ferson and Willie Watson replacing the unavailable James Ferguson and Johnny Young.

On a tight pitch both sides found it difficult to play football from the back and resorted to the long ball for the majority of the game. Trevor Brownlee had the first effort after 2 minutes, but his shot went well over. There was little else to report in the opening 20 minutes except a number of yellow cards, with both teams looking the most dangerous from set pieces. The first real opportunity fell to the home side when they got in behind the Killymoon defence only for keeper Gary Stewart to save the visitors, blocking a shot from close range. Killymoon did create a number of half chances but couldn't trouble Kyle Nelson in the Annagh goal and it took another good save from Stewart on 25 minutes after the visitors Killymoon defence was again cut open as they appealed for a hand ball. Stewart was unable to prevent the home side taking the lead on 30 minutes when they again breached the Killymoon defence down the left hand side and this time made no mistake to break the deadlock. The home side had the upper hand at this point and another effort from the left wing went narrowly wide. Five minutes before the interval Killymoon were dealt another blow when Ali Young injured his knee and had to be replaced by Andy Neill.

Killymoon upped their performance in the second half with Conall Kilpatrick going close when his header went over the crossbar when well placed. With good football at a premium both sides were working hard at creating an opening, but both teams found it difficult to penetrate the respective defences. Willie Watson was the second Killymoon player replaced due to injury, with Patrick McElhatton taking his place. It wasn't until final 10 minutes that the visitors began to get some clear cut opportunities with Gary Crooks starting to show his attacking ability by getting past his marker on numerous occasions and on 85 minutes he nearly got the equaliser, but his effort was well saved by Nelson. The big keeper then pulled off an excellent double save from close range in the final minute to prevent Killymoon taking the game into extra time and ensure Annagh’s passage into the second round of the cup.

Manager Don Smyth was disappointed that the game didn't go into extra time, but will be hoping that the injuries picked up by Young and Watson aren't serious as he plans for another cup game this Saturday with Killymoon travelling to Banbridge AFC in the second round of the Bob Radcliffe Cup.
