Darren Martin from Martin's Bar (Cookstown) hands over sponsorship for Killymoon Rangers game against Dergview on Friday to manager Don Smyth.

A goal 10 minutes from the end of a tightly fought contest at the Sports Arena was enough to give visitors Dergview the victory in the Ladbrokes.com Championship 2 fixture last Friday evening. Sponsored by Martin’s Bar and in front of a large crowd, Killymoon welcomed back James Ferguson, Lee Hunter, Ali Young, Adrian Ferson and Gareth McElhatton into the squad that defeated Chimney Corner in the first game of the season.

The first half saw the visitors edge possession, but it took nearly 25 minutes before the first meaningful effort on goal that required Gary Stewart to make a comfortable save from a shot from 20 yards. Dergview then should have opened the scoring shortly after when the home side couldn’t clear a corner and were relieved when the eventual shot went narrowly over the crossbar. Killymoon were dealt a blow on 35 minutes when Willie Watson received a injury from a clash of heads and had to be replace by Lee Hunter. Although Killymoon did improve as the first half progressed their final ball let them down on too many occasions and the half time whistle sounded with neither team able to make the breakthrough.

Ali Young replaced the injured Stephen Purvis at half-time, but it was Dergview who continued to dictate at the start of the second half going close on 52nd and 58th minute, before Johnny Young nearly gave the home side the lead after a well worked free-kick. Dergview continued to create the better chances, but as the game entered the last 20 minutes the game started to flow from end to end and Killymoon thought they had should have had a penalty when Hunter was brought down on the edge of the penalty area however, the referee waved play on. David McMullan’s long throws were causing problems for the visitors and on 77 minutes Ali Young got his head on the end of one and it took an excellent save by the Dergview stopper, low to his left, to prevent Killymoon taking the lead. With neither team pulling out of challenges as the referee began to 'miss' a number of fouls by both sides the eventual breakthrough came on the 80th minute. As both sides tangled for the ball in the centre circle, Killymoon had 2 appeals for fouls turned down before the ball broke down the Dergview left and with the home defence pulled out of position A. Sproule cut inside and placed the ball past Stewart to the delight of his team mates and travelling support. The last 10 minutes saw both sides create chances, with Warren Smith shooting narrowly wide for Killymoon and Stewart making a good save from a deflected Dergview free-kick, but the referee signalled the end of the game and victory for the visitors.

Manager Don Smyth was disappointed by the result, but couldn’t fault the effort put in by his players. The manager said 'I didn't think we played to our capabilities tonight and gave the ball away too easy, especially in the first half, but credit to the players as they never gave up even after conceding the late goal. We will work on a number of areas at training this week and I don’t expect the same mistakes to be made against Hanover this Saturday.'

This Saturday Killymoon entertain former Mid-Ulster league rivals Hanover at the Sports Arena in the first round of the Bob Radcliffe Cup, kick-off 2.30pm.
