Killymoon made the trip to Portstewart on the back of some good performances but with luckless results. With a soft pitch, on a sunny but cold day, Killymoon took the game to Portstewart. Both James Ferguson and Patrick McElhatton looked lively breaking through midfield and causing the Portstewart's back-line havoc. With Johnny Young dominating midfield Killymoon looked comfortable until what looked like an ordinary free kick floated over the head of oncoming goalkeeper Gareth McElhatton (0-1). Sensing heads would drop, Portstewart pressed but a superb captain's performance by Steven McElhatton and his defence helped Killymoon weather the storm. Gareth McElhatton soon made a couple of outstanding saves to redeem his early mistake. The first half ended with Killymoon on top and pushing for an equaliser.
The second half started with Killymoon making a lot of the running. James Ferguson was causing Portstewart problems with runs down the left hand side. As the second half progressed, manager Smyth made a few substitutions. Marc Stewart came on for the injured Gary Crooks and Willie Watson on for Patrick McElhatton. With the match fading away out of the hands of Killymoon, an opportunist goal came along from goal-happy Warren Smith. A fiasco between defender and goalkeeper allowed Smith an easy chance to level the match (1-1). Simon Young came on for the tireless Johnny Young much to the delight of Portstewart. Nevertheless sensing a win, Killymoon pushed on. They say lightning never strikes twice however in the last few minutes Ali Young, having another good game since returning to action, pressured Portstewart's defence into a similar mistake that led to the first goal. Warren Smith was left with an open goal and he duly slotted home to the delight of the travelling fans (2-1). In what seemed a lifetime, Killymoon held out for a well deserved win.
Manager Don Smyth was delighted with the result and the performance of the team." Neither ourselves or Portstewart would be happy about the goals conceded but I thought we deserved the victory as we controlled the match for long periods and created some excellent chances. The players showed character, a good team spirit and a will to win, particularly after going behind, which is of great credit to them.
