Saturday 6th March 2010, Championship 2
3.00 pm kick off
After losing 4 nil at home to Knockbreda earlier in the season, Killymoon travelled to Belfast intent on putting in a much improved display. As with the previous Saturday the team were hit by another suspension, this time to Ali Young, but welcomed Johnny Young and Patrick McElhatton back into the squad. Kyle Smith kept his place at right back in the place of Andy Neill, who hadn't fully recovered from a knock sustained in the previous week however, Conall Kilpatrick was fit enough to return to the starting line-up.
With the sun shinning Breda pushed the visitors back from the first whistle without threatening Michael Brown in the Killymoon goal and James McPartland had the Cookstown sides first shot that was deflected for a corner on 4 minutes. A few minutes later the action was again in the Killymoon penalty area and it took an excellent block from Kilpatrick to keep his side on level terms. The game was going from end to end and Willie Ferguson nearly got on the end of a cross from Gary Crooks, but the ball just too high for the winger. On 23 minutes Breda were left wondering how they hadn't taken the lead. Killymoon couldn't clear a corner and James McPartland blocked the first shot on the goal line before Breda had another 3 efforts from close range, but each time a Killymoon player was able to block the shot and eventually the ball was cleared. Almost immediately Kilpatrick released Young down the left his effort went narrowly wide. Kilpatrick was having an outstanding game at the back for Killymoon and was again needed to put in a last ditch tackle on the half hour mark to avert danger from the visitors goal. Dicky Donaghy replaced the injured David McMullan before the break and Killymoon had a great chance to go into half-time with the lead, unfortunately McPartland couldn't find a way past the Breda keeper when clean through on goal. Ferguson then fired just wide from a Young corner before Crooks ensured the half ended goalless with another well timed tackle with Breda looking dangerous.
The second half was similar to the first with little quality football, but plenty of effort and goal mouth action. Breda came out strongly and within 5 minutes had hit the crossbar and called Brown into action to make a brave save from a corner. This was followed by a volley over the Killymoon bar before McPartland had the visitors first effort of the half with a long range shot. As Breda pushed forward they were nearly made to pay on 18 minutes when a quick break found them outnumbered in defence, but fortunately for the home side a defender was able to get a tackle in on Young as he tried to turn inside for a shot on goal. The game continued to switch from end to end as both sides looked to get the breakthrough with Young going close for the visitors before Brown was again called into action making a brilliant save low to his left, but the rebound looked to have fell to a Breda forward to tap into an empty net however, Crooks again made a excellent last ditch tackle to the anguish of the home side. The resulting corner also caused problems for Killymoon and it took a goal line clearance from S McElhatton to keep Breda out. Patrick McElhatton replaced McPartland and along with Donaghy gave the home defence plenty to think about with their movement and work rate. With 15 minutes left it looked as if Breda had eventually made the breakthrough when their tricky forward wriggled through 2 challenges before being taken down in the penalty area by a rash tackle. The penalty taker sent Brown the wrong way but he also sent the ball the wrong side of the post. The final few minutes saw the sides tire from the effects of the warm weather and their exertions on the pitch, with Killymoon’s final effort from P McElhatton easily dealt with by the home keeper.
This was Killymoon's first draw of the season in a game were those watching must still be wondering how neither team were able to break the deadlock with the amount of chances that were created. The Killymoon back line was especially solid on Saturday with Kyle Smith showing that he can be relied on to put in a solid performance at right back after spending the majority of the last few seasons captaining the reserves.
This Saturday Killymoon are on their travels again when they visit Tobermore United, with the game kicking-off at 3pm.
