Killymoon Rangers poor run of form continued last Saturday when they suffered a disappointing home defeat at the hands of Portstewart. Manager Don Smyth was again forced into more changes to his starting line-up with Patrick McElhatton and Willie Ferguson unavailable, with Marc Stewart and Lee Hunter returning.
It was Stewart who had the first effort of the game, shooting straight at the visiting keeper, before Portstewart put Killymoon under some pressure of their own with Gareth McElhatton having to make a save from a free-kick. The Killymoon front pairing of Ali and Johnny Young both had half chances as the game progressed and M Stewart again forced the Portstewart into another comfortable save on the half hour mark. Late in the half Portstewart began to push the Killymoon defence back and had a number of efforts from free kicks before taking the lead on 35 minutes. As the home defence was dragged to the left a sweeping ball across the pitch released the Portstewart winger and he made no mistake shooting home unmarked from the edge of the penalty area (0-1).
Killymoon were dealt a double blow at the beginning of the second half when skipper Stephen McElhatton had to be replaced after colliding with his own keeper and A Young was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. To compound matters the visitors also doubled their lead between the 2 incidents (0-2). To the home sides credit they continued to work hard and David McMullan, J Young and Cameron Stewart all had efforts at goal, but the game began to get bad tempered, not helped by some inconsistent refereeing decisions. With 15 minutes remaining Portstewart wrapped up the points with their third goal (0-3) and less than 10 minutes later scored number four (0-4) to round off a miserable day for the Cookstown side. C Stewart did score a consolation for Killymoon before the end (1-4), but it couldn’t gloss over another disappointing result. The game was kindly sponsored by Robert Moran Meats.
Killymoon have no game this Saturday, but entertain league leaders H&W Welders on Tuesday 30 March at the Sports Arena, kick-off 8pm.
