Killymoon Rangers Res 2
16 May 2009, Ballymena & Provincial League

Having celebrated clinching promotion the following week, this match turned into something of a damp squib for Killymoon Rangers Reserves as they succumbed to a surprise defeat in Carrickfergus.

Despite fielding a much depleted side from their usual line up, Rangers twice took the lead but failed to capitalise on their possession and take their chances in front of goal.

Killymoon got off to the ideal start when they took the lead after just ten minutes. The home side cleared a Killymoon corner to the edge of their box only for Kyle Smith to control the ball and volley into the top corner of the net (1-0). This signalled the start of a period of Rangers domination as Cameron Stewart and George Dardis went close to extending their lead. Rangers' defence were untroubled for most of the half and it came as a complete surprise when Woodlands forced an equaliser on the half hour mark. A long throw wasn't properly dealt with and an attacker fired a deflected effort into the corner of the net (HT 1-1). After this the match became scrappy with neither side able to maintain their composure when the final ball beckoned.

Rangers came out in positive fashion in the second period determined to finish off their season in style. Andy Rea scored after good work from Martin Bogan and David Harkness to regain the lead (2-1) and this should have settled Rangers so that they could impose their superior passing game on their opponents. Unfortunately, Woodlands' long ball game seemed to prevail as the half wore on and they were able to wear down the visitors. Two goals in three minutes were Rangers' undoing. (2-3). Both could and should have been avoided as they were down to defensive lapses as muck as anything. With Rangers pushing looking for a way back into the match they were caught on the break and the Woodlands' striker fired an unstoppable effort from twenty-five yards into the top corner. It was a goal fit to win any match (2-4).

Despite this defeat Killymoon Reserves can be proud of their achievements this season as they have secured promotion to the top tier of the Ballymena Junior League at their first attempt. Congratulations to all the players and the management team of George Dardis and Paul Coyle.
